NEW MASTER'S IN ENGINEERING & OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT AT UNH

University of New Haven Engineering Master's Program

West Haven, Conn., May 27, 2010 -- The Tagliatela College of Engineering at the University of New Haven (UNH) has created a new Master of Science in engineering and operations management (MSEOM) program for graduate students. Potential students include engineering and technical professionals holding a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or business seeking to expand their career horizons or to move up to technical and operational management positions. The program was approved, licensed and accredited by the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education in April, and students will enter the program beginning in fall 2010.

As Connecticut manufacturing becomes more high-tech and global supply chain oriented, professionals who can develop new products, manage manufacturing and service processes and handle supply chain management are in demand across all industry sectors. According to Alex Sommers, Ph.D., professor of industrial engineering and MSEOM program coordinator, "Quality assurance, pricing, rapid delivery and customer response are critical elements in determining company success. The new MSEOM program will prepare graduates for 'take charge' roles in both local and multinational corporations, imparting an understanding of lean manufacturing, six sigma quality management, procurement, logistics and life cycle planning." He adds, "International competition is intense, so we've designed the UNH MSEOM program to educate professionals who will survive and prosper in today's global economy." Sommers received his doctorate from Purdue University in industrial engineering, a Master of Science degree in industrial engineering from Rutgers University and a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University.

A leader in experiential education, the University of New Haven is experiencing a historic and nationally recognized surge in enrollment. Founded in 1920, the University provides its students with a unique combination of solid liberal arts and real-world, hands-on professional training. UNH is a private university with an 80-acre main campus. The University has an enrollment of more than 5,700; approximately 1,700 graduate students and more than 4,000 undergraduates, 70 percent of whom reside in University housing. The University offers more than 80 undergraduate degrees and more than 25 graduate degrees through the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, the Tagliatela College of Engineering and University College. University of New Haven students study abroad through a variety of distinctive programs.
