The Northeast Corridor and the American Economy Report Published - February 2015

Northeast Corridor Commission’s report to Congress, The Northeast Corridor and the American Economy.

I am pleased to announce the publication of the Northeast Corridor Commission’s report to Congress, The Northeast Corridor and the American Economy. We owe a special debt of gratitude to the business and civic leaders that organized and participated in focus groups and individual interviews up and down the Corridor. Your stories provided some of the most compelling material in the final report, from how large and small firms use the NEC to access talented workers and capital, to how major manufacturers in the Midwest use the NEC to access global markets via east coast ports.

The study combined your stories with quantitative analysis. Some highlights:

·         The NEC plays a key role in sustaining the NEC Region’s $3 trillion economy, the fifth largest in the world just ahead of France.

·         An unexpected loss of the NEC, even for a single day, would cost up to $100 million per day as a result of higher congestion on roadways and lost productivity.

·         The NEC moves a workforce that contributes $50 billion annually to the American economy.

·         Seven million jobs are located within five miles of a NEC rail station, almost a third of all jobs in the NEC Region.

We hope you are able to follow the link above to download the report and learn more. Please feel free to forward this information to other colleagues, business groups, and civic organizations. Finally, we would like this report to be the beginning, not the end, of an ongoing partnership. We are planning on hosting several events this summer and fall to present and discuss the findings of the report. We will keep you posted on that. In addition, there is an area on our website at the link above where businesses and communities can submit their stories for future efforts to illustrate the important relationship between the Northeast Corridor rail network and a thriving national economy.
